GENERAL POST OFFICE, LONDON, SEP CO

sir,
I am directed by the Postmaster General to acknowledge the
receipt of your letter of the 11th of last month, on the
subject of a representation made to The Secretary of State for
the Colonies by the Postmaster General of Hong-Kong that it
would be a material improvement if the French and German
Packet Companies conveving mails to that Colony could be
induced to afford on board their Packets similar facilities
to those recently granted by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam
Navigation Company for sorting correspondence on the voyage
between Singapore and Hong-Kong.
In reply I am to acquaint you, for the information of
the Secretary of State, that the Postmaster General feels
very diffident as to the success of any application made in
this direction to the French and German Post Offices; but,
before taking further steps in the matter, he would like to
know whether the Hong-Kong Government is prepared to pay for
the conveyance and maintenance board the Foreign Packets of
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
